With more and more home bound elderly parents, the burden falls upon their children to care for them. Candy Apples is a play focusing on the care giving children as opposed to the aging parent. The three Apple sisters are reunited after an incident involving Lucy, their mother. Brenda, having taught school for 32 years, has retired to take care of the home bound Lucy. Jessie returns to the family home from her New York City nursing position. Lynn, self-centered and a vivacious spitfire, arrives from Florida. At first they enjoy their sisterly cordiality. After dinner, and after a few drinks, raw feelings are exposed as Brenda lambastes both sisters for not taking more of an interest in their family as well as the care of their mother. Jessie confides to Brenda that she has an advanced stage of cancer. The second act begins with what we assume to be the death of their mom, Lucy. Instead, it is a surprise to learn that it was Brenda, their sister, who died and now the dilemma becomes what to do with their mom. In typical Lynn fashion, she gets her way and returns to Florida, leaving Jessie with her health issues to care for Lucy. When Lynn is notified by a longtime family friend of Jessie’s deteriorating health, Lynn immediately comes back to the Apple home intending to care for both Lucy and Jessie. Unfortunately, Jessie dies leaving Lynn to care for Lucy. A few years have passed and we see a different Lynn. Pounds heavier and once a fastidious dresser is now content to be in spandex. Previously eager to correct her mom’s forgetfulness, she now is able to repeat the stories her mom tells verbatim. Matter of fact, she seems to encourage her mom to retell the same stories Lynn has heard numerous times before. In Lynn we see a major transformation. Her self-centeredness is broken as she is remolded into a loving, care giving daughter. Maybe…
